Library Nodes

Scopus and Web of Science for KNIME: search the literature, look up authors, and analyze journals

Bring the world’s leading research databases into your KNIME workflows. Library Nodes wrap the APIs of Elsevier Scopus and Clarivate’s Web of Science in ready-to-use KNIME nodes, so you can search the literature, look up authors and institutions, track citations, and analyze journals without leaving your workflow or writing a single line of HTTP code.

Whether you run a systematic review, build a bibliometric dashboard, or keep a research-intelligence report up to date every week: fetch the data, join it with your own tables, and let KNIME do the rest.

Requires an API key from Elsevier (Scopus) or the Clarivate Developer Portal (Web of Science). Which endpoints you can call depends on your key and your institution’s subscription.

📚 Four Extensions, One Library

Install only what you need — each extension is self-contained and works on its own:

  • 🔬 Scopus: The largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. Search documents, retrieve abstracts and full-text articles, look up authors and affiliations, pull citation counts and overviews, browse serial and non-serial titles and subject classifications, fetch PlumX metrics, and even submit author feedback
  • 🌐 Web of Science Starter: Search Web of Science documents and journals, and retrieve a document by its UID or a journal by its ID — a good entry point to the Web of Science Core Collection
  • 🪶 Web of Science Lite: Search and retrieve lightweight records, including a node to page through results by query ID for integration into your own pipelines
  • 📊 Web of Science Journal: Journal and category data of the Journal Citation Reports — bibliographic details, yearly reports, cited and citing journals, title histories, and the date of the last data update

🚀 Features

  • 🧩 More than 60 nodes: Every operation of the supported APIs is a node of its own, neatly organized in the node repository by topic, e.g. “Abstract Retrieval”, “Author Retrieval”, “Citations”, or “Journals”
  • 🔑 Authenticate once: A dedicated authentication node per extension (“Api Key Header”, “Api Key Query”, and “Bearer Auth” for Scopus; “Key” for Web of Science) — configure your credentials once and reuse them for every request
  • 🔗 Configuration passthrough: Every request node passes its configuration on, so you can chain requests in sequence without cluttering your workflow with extra connections
  • 🗂️ Structured results: Choose the Result Format per node and get the response as a clean table, ready for joining, filtering, and aggregating
  • ⏱️ Timeouts under control: A “Timeouts” node in the “Advanced” category lets you tune connection and read timeouts for slow or large queries
  • 🆓 Free: The nodes are free to use with the KNIME Analytics Platform

🎯 Why Library Nodes?

  • ✅ No-code access to scholarly data: query Scopus and Web of Science with a few clicks, with no scripting and no external libraries
  • ✅ One consistent look and feel: all four extensions share the same node design, so once you know one, you know them all
  • ✅ Built for pipelines: combine literature retrieval with KNIME’s data handling, looping, and reporting to go from a list of DOIs or ORCIDs straight to a finished dataset
  • ✅ Repeatable: run your searches on a schedule, e.g. with NodePit Runner, and always have fresh numbers
  • ✅ Always current: the nodes are generated straight from the API specifications and updated when the APIs change

🌟 Example Use Cases

  • Enrich a list of DOIs, PubMed IDs, or EIDs with titles, abstracts, authors, and citation counts
  • Build a publication profile of an author from their ORCID
  • Compare an institution’s output over the years via affiliation search and citation counts
  • Rank journals of a subject category by their yearly Journal Citation Reports data
  • Check whether you are entitled to the full text of an article before you try to download it
  • Keep a monitoring workflow running that alerts you to new publications on a topic
  • Combine Scopus and Web of Science records to cross-check coverage between the two databases

Library Nodes are free to use. You only need an API key for the services you want to access.
