KNIME Workspace Inventory

Ever wondered which workflows are taking up the most space, when they were last modified, or who originally created them?

KNIME Analytics Platform provides powerful tools for building and executing workflows, but its workspace browser offers limited visibility into workflow metadata. Finding an older workflow, identifying recently modified projects, or examining workspace usage can be surprisingly difficult.

KNIME Workspace Inventory addresses this limitation by providing a comprehensive, searchable inventory of the workflows stored in your KNIME workspace.

What Does It Do?
The workflow automatically scans the current KNIME workspace, identifies individual workflows, and extracts valuable information from KNIME's internal XML configuration files and filesystem metadata.

For each workflow, it collects:
Workflow Name — Identifies the workflow.
Description — Retrieves the workflow's documented description, when available.
Node Count — Reports the number of nodes within the workflow.
Workflow Size — Calculates the total size of the workflow directory, including subdirectories, in both bytes and megabytes.
Authorship Information — Identifies recorded authors and authoring dates.
Editing History — Retrieves recorded editor information and editing timestamps.
Creation and Modification Dates — Provides additional historical information about the workflow.

How Does It Work?
The solution uses standard KNIME nodes to examine workflow.knime and workflow-metadata.xml, extract XML metadata using XPath, recursively calculate directory sizes, and consolidate the results into a structured table.

The workflow is organized into clearly documented sections, making it easy to understand, modify, and extend.

No Python scripts, external databases, or additional programming are required.

Getting Started
The workflow automatically determines the active KNIME workspace. No manual directory configuration is required.

Simply open the workflow and execute it to generate your workspace inventory.

The resulting table can be sorted, filtered, or exported for further analysis.
